I came home one day just in time to catch my neighbor planting flowers in my front garden. I had admired several of his plants, and asked him if they would do well in shade and among tenacious tree roots.

Little did I know he’d be so obliging!

The neighborly exchange of plants, recipes and tools is as old as human history, but to many modern city dwellers seems as remote as the horse and buggy. Even in areas where neighbors do have reciprocal relationships, they are often limited. In his book, “Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future,” Bill McKibben notes “studies have shown that as urban neighborhoods became more heavily used by cars instead of pedestrians, the average person saw the number of friends and acquaintances she had in her neighborhood drop from nine to four.

”

This truly is a loss. McKibben identifies the problem as a kind of “hyper-individualism,” resulting largely from the same industrialized lifestyles that have contributed so strongly to climate change. Loss of community also takes a personal toll. “The body reacts to community in measurable ways. Staggering ways,” McKibben notes. “According to Robert Putnam, if you do not belong to any group at present, joining a club or society of some kind halves the risk that you will die in the next year.

” Pretty impressive numbers, eh?

We chose our neighborhood because of its reputation for being an old-fashioned neighborhood, where kids run in and out of each other’s houses. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been to ice cream socials, a children’s talent show, and all kinds of seasonal celebrations. One family hosts an annual August “Kid Wash,” where children in swimsuits soap up, and enjoy being sprayed by adults with garden hoses. To stave off cabin-fever this winter, another family organized a bowling party. It was heart-warming to watch dozens of neighbors, ages 3 to 83, knocking down pins in lane after lane of the Playdium.

On a more serious note, last year 10 of us met for nine months to discuss sustainability issues, using a course packet from the Northwest Earth Institute. (For more information on the institute, click here.) As a result, we started a neighborhood vegetable garden. A book club formed this year, as well as a “band” of about eight, who gather to play guitar, ukulele, hammered dulcimer, fiddle and flute.

“Safety in Numbers” is one of the band names we’ve considered. Suggested as a joke to help quell our nerves at our first public gig - a neighborhood festival celebrating local merchants — it nevertheless speaks to my point about community.

We’re living in interesting times. The prospect of peak oil, and the reality of global warming, are challenges better faced in solidarity than alone. To have the “durable future” that McKibben writes about, we’re going to need to build it from the ground up, working with the folks next door.

Granted, certain features of my neighborhood facilitate community. Houses are close together — we can’t avoid frequent encounters. One resident says it’s “like dorm-life for grown-ups.” And, most of the homes on our street were built to the same circa-1925 blueprint. As another homeowner remarked, “these houses are the ‘working man’s dream:’ no one has anything better than anyone else.” You feel at home nearly everywhere you go, with intriguing exceptions in decor and renovations. In fact, we recently held a block tour of six look-alike houses, to see what people had done with their attics, kitchens, additions, etc.

Obviously, community building works in other contexts: places of worship, schools, clubs. But I think we do best when we know each other in various capacities and have multidimensional relationships. This is what attracts me to the eco-village and intentional communities movements, and to cooperatives, like Albany’s Honest Weight Food Co-op.

During three hours in the store recently, I had a set of experiences that parallel those in my neighborhood. While staffing an informational table on Fair Trade, I touched base with someone who’s starting a writing group, discussed exchanging healing services with a body work practitioner, and hooked up a tense coworker with a source for stress reduction classes. Though crowded and bustling, the store still facilitates mutually beneficial connections. In the community room, for example, you might find a parenting group, a knitter’s circle, or a senior fitness class. It’s not unlike Bill McKibben’s descriptions of farmers’ markets, where people “have 10 times as many conversations … as they do at supermarkets.

”

Chinese medicine places a premium on these interpersonal networks, calling them “personal circulation vessels,” to indicate how essential they are. People who have not developed them are sometimes referred to as “dead doors that lead to nowhere” (Yanhua Zang, “Transforming Emotions with Chinese Medicine“). A disturbing, but apt, metaphor.

It takes extra effort to be a “living door,” but we need these now, more than ever. Such connections ground us in our communities, refresh our relationships, and open up new possibilities for friendship, collaboration and support.

When you think of growing your own food, you probably think of endless rows of corn, the middle of nowhere, people in overalls and dial-up internet..

You're also probably thinking about hours spent planting seeds, mulching leaves and plowing soil

But there's a better way to harvest your own crops that works especially well for those of use living in urban areas (with high-speed internet and no room to drive a tractor)..

It's known as square foot gardening

Square foot gardening is a variation on what's known as the French Intensive or Biointensive method of farming..

Mel Bartholomew helped popularize the "square foot" name and even has a book on the subject

The concept is pretty simple, and you don't need a book or a change of national status to get a highly productive garden going..

We'll walk you through the basic steps to getting started on your own tiny plot of land

1 - Square Foot Gardening in a Nutshell
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The square foot concept is simple. First we'll build a raised bed. That way there's no need to worry about poor soil (or total lack of soil -- you can even build a raised bed atop a concrete patio)..

We'll use our own soil mixture

Next, you divide your bed into sections of one square foot each -- hence the name -- and then plant vegetables in just the amount of space they need..

For instance, while you might only be able to fit one tomato plant in a square, it isn't hard to stuff in a whole bunch of carrots, onions or other smaller vegetables

The main advantages of the square foot system are less watering (great for drought areas), easier weeding (no long rows to wander down), and a greatly reduced workload

On the downside, you won't be able to create a corn maze come October
But with a little work, you should have fresh veggies on the table well through the end of summer

2 - How to Proceed
///////////////////////////////////

The first step is to pick a decent section of your yard for gardening..

Look for an area that gets enough sunlight for all the plants you'd like to grow

Once you've selected an area you can dig down for an added bit of depth if you like (you can even double dig the soil if you're looking for a workout)
You can achieve a perfectly healthy garden without digging

3 - Get Your Wood
//////////////////////////////////

The next thing to do is construct your beds. You can make the beds whatever size you'd like, but for beginner we recommend a 4' x 4' plot. It's small enough that you won't feel overwhelmed and big enough to yield a decent crop..

It also just so happens that most lumber comes in 8' lengths, so you only need to buy two boards and have your local hardware shop saw them in half for you

Tip: Since your garden will be out in the elements all summer, you might think about getting pressure treated wood which is better at repelling water -- You may want reconsider. Not only is pressure treated wood much more expensive, it has a number of chemicals in it that can leech into your soil..

It is possible that a small quantity can leach into your vegetables (see this study for more information)

Make sure you get something thick enough..

A couple of 10 x 2 x 8' boards should do the trick

TIP You can buy a small roll of strap metal that is about 1/2" wide with holes in it (to nail through). Nail about a 1' section around each corner of your box..

4 - Put It Together
//////////////////////////////////

Screw your boards together and build the box. You'll just need a drill and some good size screws. Sink at least three screws at each end..

When soil gets wet, it's quite heavy and you don't want your garden to burst at the seams

Next, fill your new box with soil. Mel Bartholomew sells a special mix of soil tailored to square foot gardening. His mixture is 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite. With the exception of vermiculite, it's pretty easy get the other ingredients on your own..

In fact, even regular old potting soil will work though you may need to fertilize a bit more

Tip: Many organic markets like Earth Fare compost their leftover and unsold vegetables. Try asking your local market if they have some compost you could buy on the cheap..

Or start your own compost

The next step is to mark off your grid. You might be able to find a wooden grid at the lumbar yard, or you can make your own. If you're lazy, you can use string, which works just as well..

Just make some marks at one-foot intervals along each side of the garden
Then use either some small screws or nails to hold your string in place and stretch them across your garden, creating one foot squares

5 - Planting
//////////////////////

Now the fun part. If you're starting from seed, make sure you start early enough -- just after the last frost..

Check with your local nursery if you're unsure when to plant in your area

Planting a square foot garden properly depends on what you're planting. Consult the directions on your seed packets to see how far apart the plants need to be in order to thrive. Generally you should plant in a grid of either 1, 4, 9, or 16 plants per square foot..

If you feel like you've packed the plants too close, you can always thin them as they grow

As for what you should grow, that's up to you..

Plant things you like and don't limit yourself just the vegetables -- herbs and flowers will work as well

Then just sit back and wait for nature to take it's course. Water your garden by hand with a watering can..

You probably won't need to fertilize since we used such rich soil to begin with

When you harvest a particular crop, go ahead and dig out that square foot and replenish the soil

Plant again if there's still time left in your growing season

5 - Tips and Tricks
//////////////////////////////////

Stuck in an upstairs apartment which no space at all? All is not lost. It won't offer as much space, but you can check out container options, which work something like a square foot garden. You can get good results from plants grown in large self-watering pots on a patio or balcony..

If you want to get really fancy with your garden (or if you happen to travel a lot) you can hook up an automated drip watering system. It isn't too hard to do, and some hardware stores even sell complete kits that contain everything you need..

And there you have it. Sit back and enjoy a summer full of fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers without the back-breaking work. Once you've done it for a while, you may want to expand your garden. Perhaps next year do two plots or even three..

Just remember to leave some room between them so you can get to your plants easily for watering and harvesting..

The Sleepless Ponderings of "One Intent"

Hey Everybody,

Just wanted to take some time out and touch base with the masses,
well, not the masses really..."just you".

I have to say, I hope they approve cloning soon, I need about a
dozen more of me to stay on top of everything going on. I don’t
know though, some would say that one is far more than enough
already. Maybe I would agree at times, I’ve fired myself several
times already. But "I" don’t pay unemployment so "I" had to go
crawling back. You’ve heard of "never employ a family member",
well, employing yourself is a whole other ballgame.

My computer screens seem to pick up all the dust in the air and evenly
spread it across my view, so that websites begin to take on unique
views of their very own sometimes.
Makes it easy to sometimes "miss the point" in some post when reading,
as some have said...lol

I finally reached over and broke out the glass cleaner when I realized
I had taken all I could and cleaned all of them. Just in case you
don’t know, glass cleaner sends out some kind of call that a "new"
place is awaiting any dust who hadn’t found a place to reside yet,
so had put it off for awhile. A social program for wayward dust I’m
not running...

Which leads me to something else entirely, but not really.
I had to roll back Windows to a few days ago because of some crap
somewhere on one of the computers, that when I try to install a newer
version of an older virus scanner, I first have to uninstall the
older one...which in doing so, let’s "something" out of it’s
container it was put in, so I get that old "you must be signed in
as an administrator" to do that kind of thing. Da....I’m sitting right
here, you can’t sign on otherwise...I AM THAT I AM the Administrator
dagnabbit.

Anyway...so I roll back a few days to correct that....being told
"you ain’t the one" just $^%$$&* me off to no end. But then I noticed
something else entirely..."everything" rolls back to the way it was
days before. That would be days before I cleaned my screens of dust...
I know your thinking...."that’s impossible". Well, "it ain’t
impossible",
cause I’m gonna have to clean the blame things again!

So be very careful if you ever have to roll back to an earlier date
on any of your computers...."everything changes". My wife was there
one minute, and back at work the previous Friday next.
"Deva vu’. But then, this "ability" could have it’s "uses".

By the way...you can get a great virus scanner free at
http://download.com
just put in AVG Free Edition. It might tell you, but it don’t care
if you have other virus/security software or not. It finds stuff the
others can’t or won’t. There’s also a great free online scanning
engine at http://trendmicro.com . Just click on "Housecall" and let it run.

Thinking about putting together a subscription list for mailing out
all the great things I come across everyday...if there’s enough interest
in such a thing. thinking....

I said it’s new. I’m still dreaming, and having nightmares in "code".
You can do a lot there now, like sign up, and set up a profile. I’m
working on getting custom profiles installed, bulletins, and lots of
the "stuff your used to". But that’s time, money and just me, for
the most part.

Right now there’s profiles, pictures, messenger styled chat,
classifieds, groups, blogs, audio/video styled chat, chatroom, music,
events, articles, boards, even forums, but I’m not so impresses with
those right now and the "ajax" system...I may decide to cross over and use phpBB to go with it..we’ll see.

You can send mail, invite friends, set up a group, use the blogs.
Things I’m looking to add on are:

Private Messenger, Top Friends Creator, YouTube Module, Flickr Module,
CSS-HTML In Profiles, Chat In Groups, Bulletins, Profile Builder,
Social Networks Inviter, and a lot more [big list in profile view
on the site explains more.

At any rate, go over and check it out if you like..but that’s where
most of my time has been spent...as well as lots of sleepless
nights.

Also, putting together a show @ nowlive.com, a internet
radio, chat, live, call in show, that will be in relation to the site
as I can get it going right. Maybe have you guys call in or just hang
out from time to time and "talk stuff" related to what we post and

Aromatherapy is a method used to calm the body and mind, fight infections, and promote well-being through the use of essential oils. Essential oils are derived from plants via various methods of distillation. Aromatherapy has been used for hundreds of years by different cultures all over the world. There is no denying the powerful effects of plants on our lives and essential oils are no exception.

Essential oils in can be used in aromatherapy in many different ways. There are guidelines for using essential oils, it's important to follow the guidelines because some of the oils can be harmful if used inappropriately. Some oils cannot be used directly on the skin and must be diluted with carrier oil before being placed on the skin.

One of the most popular ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your daily routine is through the use of creams or soaps. There are many companies that offer blends of essential oils in base creams, each with a different purpose in mind. You can find blends made to energize, relax, or revitalize. You can easily make these creams yourself through the use of an unscented cream and by adding essential oils that compliment each other. This may take some experimenting, but you can come up with some wonderful combinations.

Another delivery method is through inhalation. Infection fighting oils are best used this way. One easy way of making an inhalant is to put a few drops of an essential oil (one popular one is tea tree) into hot water. You reap the benefits when you inhale the steam. Since some of the oils are strong and may overwhelm you, start of slowly until you find the right amount. Essential oils work in diffusers too, but most likely won't be as strong. Diffusing the right oils can create a calm and pleasant smelling atmosphere in your home.

There are some cautions attached to using essential oils for aromatherapy: often they are not to be used where there are children or pets. If you think that your child would be helped in some way by an essential oil, check the literature carefully. Most likely if you decide it's okay to use it, you will want to put it in a diffuser. It's advisable also to take the extra step of talking to your pediatrician about it. Check with your veterinarian also about using essential oils around your pets. Some animals are very sensitive to these oils and may even sustain liver damage. If you share your life with pets, it would be wise to use them only in a diffuser, or better yet use the creams.

Aromatherapy is a wonderful way to enhance your life through balance in your body and mind. The use of essential oils can have not only profound effects on a person’s mood, but it can affect your body as well. Essential oils can be very powerful, and must be used carefully and responsibly, especially when being administered to a child or pet. The world of aromatherapy is vast and complex, and the benefits can improve your life greatly.

How to Save the World with Cannabis/Hemp/Marijuana!

This is my work in progress. I'm entering it into the Virgin Earth Challenge to stop global warming.

Plant hemp on 600 million acres of secondary farm land in the United States.

Plant hemp on 600 million to 1 billion acres of secondary farm land in Canada.

All fuel will be made of methanol or a derivative of hemp.

All fossil fuel, oil, coal, and natural gas will no longer be used. It will stay in the ground for emergency only. For example, when we had the earthquake Krakatoa, there was about two years that the sun was blocked in that area.

All paper will be made from hemp. No trees will be cut for paper. That's the way it was 130 years ago. That will save half the trees on the planet that would otherwise be cut down in the next 30 years. All the trees will be healthier and bigger.

Most building material will be made from hemp composite.

20 to 50 percent of all proteins for food will be made from hemp seeds. In China, from 5,000 years ago to about 150 years ago, approximately 50 percent of all food was made from hemp seeds. And 20 percent of all food in Europe. On the Chinese border from Laos to Nepal to Tibet to Afghanistan all the way up to the northern border of Upper Mongolia, 50 percent of all proteins for food is still made out of hemp, and 90 percent of all butter. This starts on either side of the border to about 100 miles away from the border.

No more cotton for clothing, unless it is raised organically. Clothing will mostly be made from hemp, bamboo, soy and flax.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam in Israel believes that 30 percent of all medicines will be made out of cannabis or combinations of cannabis and other drugs.

The arid land from the Sahara all the way across the world will be planted with hemp.

People from 18 to 30 years of age, throughout the world, will join a different kind of military, the Hemp Corps, for planting and harvesting and packaging hemp. In return for four years of duty, they will receive four years of college paid by the government.

People will live about two year's longer using cannabis.

Everything will be a lot more fun. There will be new jobs for everybody. The auto industry will build cars mostly from hemp. Computer companies will build computers of hemp. Furniture will be made of hemp cloth and hemp composite wood.

Hemp grows everywhere, from the Equator to the Arctic Circle, from the valleys to about 6,000 feet up in the mountains. It's the healthiest of the 3 million plants that grow on Earth. It has the deepest roots. It's the only plant you can grow over and over each year, and the soil will only get better.

People will be able to pay their taxes with hemp.

After harvest it leaves a root system that is mulched into the ground, revitalizing the land and making it live once again. It is the KING KONG of the King Kongs of all plant life.

All of my information about CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA has been taken from Federal and State Department of Agriculture reports, articles from Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Pulp & Paper Magazine, Scientific American, entries from encyclopedias and pharmacopoeias, and studies from all over the world during the last 200 years. This is all public information. The United States government is hiding the fact that 125 years ago, and even as far back as 4000 BC, 80% of our economy was based on the use of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA for paper, fiber and fuel. Ten to 20% of our drug economy was based on CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA medicines, 125 years ago.

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was part of our everyday life. Virtually every farm and every plot of land in the cities and towns across the United States and the world, from 100-125 years ago and before, had a CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA patch growing. The U.S. government's cover-up of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA outrages me and it should outrage you, too. I have been studying CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA for over 30 years, and I can't believe how the U.S. government, in 90 seconds in Congress, could outlaw "MARIJUANA" in 1937, without the people realizing they were outlawing CANNABIS/HEMP, the most perfect plant for the planet! They even got other countries to outlaw it, too, after the Second World War and beyond. From 1740 to 1940, 80% of all the world's CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was grown (mostly by Cossacks, who were indentured servants), and then imported from, Russia.

I will again reiterate a few of the facts about CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA, which you already know from reading my book, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes."

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was the NUMBER ONE annually renewable natural resource for 80% of all paper, fiber, textiles and fuel, from 6,000 years ago until about 125 years ago. Furthermore, it was used for 5 to 50% of the food, light, land and soil reclamation, and even 20% or more of all medicine. Everyone, from the educated to the uneducated, the farmer to the townsperson, the doctors and the scientists used

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA products and depended on them.75 to 90% of all paper used from at least 100 AD to 1883 was made of CANNABIS/HEMP. Books, (including Bibles), money and newspapers all over the world have been mainly printed on CANNABIS/HEMP for as long as these things have existed in human history.

One hundred and 25 years ago, 70 to 90% of all rope, twine, cordage, ship sails, canvas, fiber, cloth, etc., was made out of CANNABIS/HEMP fiber! It was replaced by DuPont's newly discovered petrochemical fiber (nylon) beginning in 1937. By comparison, CANNABIS/HEMP is 4 times softer than cotton, 4 times warmer, 4 times more water absorbent, has 3 times the strength of cotton, is many times more durable, is flame retardant, and doesn't use pesticides. Fifty percent of all pesticides are used on cotton, yet cotton uses only 1% of the farmland in the U.S! CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA is the most health giving plant on Earth and it doesn't require pesticides or herbicides! It is the healthiest plant for human consumption, and for the Earth itself.

Eighty percent of our economy depended on CANNABIS/HEMP for paper, fiber and fuel, 125 years ago. At that time, it took 300 man-hours to harvest an acre of CANNABIS/HEMP, but with the invention of the brand new HEMP decorticator in the 1930s, it only took 1-1/2 to 2 hours. This is equivalent to reducing the labor burden from $6,000 down to $40 per acre, in today's money. Keep in mind that the cotton gin, in 1793, reduced the man-hours from 300 hours down to 2 hours to harvest and clean an acre of cotton. CANNABIS/HEMP would have taken over the cotton market, as it is far superior to cotton, and pesticide free. The role of CANNABIS/HEMP should be determined by market supply and demand and not by undue influence of prohibition laws, federal subsidies and huge tariffs that keep the natural from replacing the synthetic. I repeat, CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA is the KING KONG of the King Kongs of all plants!

Of all the 300,000 species of plants on Earth, no other plant source can compare with the nutritional value of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA seeds. It is the only plant on Earth that provides us with the NUMBER ONE source, and the perfect balance of essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, globulin edestin protein, and essential oils all combined in one plant, and in a form which is most naturally digestible to our bodies.

As a medicine, the worldwide use of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA goes back at least 6,000 years. Remember, 10 to 20%t of our medicines used to be CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA based medicines. It has been found to be healthy and effective in the treatment of chronic pain, cancer, strokes, glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia, AIDS wasting and many other illnesses, including simple nausea, appetite stimulant, anxiety and muscle pains, etc.

On September 6, 1988, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Chief Administrative Law Judge, Francis L. Young, ruled: "Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man," and asked the Drug Enforcement Administration to reschedule it. The DEA refused, keeping it as a Schedule I drug, which they say "has no known medical use"! Thousands of studies have been done all over the world, documenting the medical use of MARIJUANA (England, Spain, Hungary, Holland, and the U.S., just to name a few). No one has ever died from MARIJUANA in over 6,000 years of recorded history... unless they were shot by a COP!

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was also used for land reclamation until 1915. CANNABIS/HEMP was planted or left to grow feral as ground cover and on riverbanks, and not intended for harvest. It is the NUMBER ONE plant in history used to prevent mudslides and loss of watershed, and river and soil erosion on Earth. It has been illegal to grow this NUMBER ONE plant in the United States since 1937.What disgusts me the most is how the U.S. government, as well as the people, knew about

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA and praised its value and then look what happened! In literally 90 seconds, the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 passed in Congress. By using the unknown name "MARIJUANA" instead of the familiar name "CANNABIS HEMP", Congress was able to accomplish this because no one knew what plant they were talking about. CANNABIS/HEMP became illegal and was replaced by petrochemical products, coal and natural gas. They made it such a banned and forbidden plant that the words "HEMP" and "CANNABIS/HEMP" were not even taught in schools from the 1940s, 50s and thereafter.

The role of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was erased from America's history (as well as most of the rest of the world's) after 1945. To prove it, think... what did you learn about CANNABIS/HEMP in grade school? High school? College? From your parents and grandparents? Nothing! (Unless it was from the underground press within the last 15 to 20 years.) The continuing suppression of this information by the U.S. government places us all in mortal jeopardy. I believe that, in order to save our planet, we must use non-fossil fuel energy.

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA, in conjunction with wind, solar, tidal and hydroelectric power, could save the planet by providing all of our energy, fuel, paper, fiber, and 10 to 20% of our medical needs, naturally. It would also reduce acid rain and chemical pollution, rebuild the soil, and reverse the greenhouse effect (no other plant can do this!).

CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA was used to make over 25,000 products before it was outlawed in 1937.

Why does the U.S. government want to eradicate this seed, out of all the seeds on Earth? They want to kill the most perfect plant on the planet. We must stop this insanity and demand that the laws against CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA be 100% repealed!!

Federal Attorney General John Ashcroft, Drug Enforcement Administration head, Asa Hutchison, and White House Drug Czar, John Walters, have been given all of these proven facts and yet are still set against the legalization of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA and recognition of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIUANA knowledge. For whatever personal reasons, they refuse to believe the facts and are willing to sacrifice the future of our planet and the health of our people by keeping it illegal.

The ban of CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA is so extreme and its intention is to hide the truth. The truth is that out of the 300,000 species, and the millions and millions of subspecies, of plants on Earth, CANNABIS/HEMP/MARIJUANA is the NUMBER ONE plant for our survival and quality of life here on Earth. Since September 11, 2001, the U.S. government and Attorney General John Ashcroft have been calling MARIJUANA users "terrorists" and yet the government of the United States has been "terrorizing" MARIJUANA users for the last 65 years! LAKE BILLY CHINOOK, Oregon -- Before power lines, people had no choice. They used lanterns, lit fires for warmth and packed away winter ice against hot summers.

But now, a growing number of Americans are shunning power lines, choosing to live "off the grid," without commercial power -- and still enjoying their computers and large-screen televisions.

In the 250-home Oregon community of Three Rivers, everyone gets most of their power from solar panels on their rooftops or on nearby structures positioned to more efficiently capture the sun.

The solar power easily handles their lights, microwave ovens, refrigerator-freezers and other needs. Some supplement the solar power with windmill-generated energy.

"Ninety percent of the people here, if (outside) power were offered to them, they'd turn it down," said Gary Sweet, who moved to the high desert community a couple of years ago.

Off-the-grid living is edging into the American mainstream. About 180,000 homes, mostly in the West, operate on it, though the power industry has not yet felt the shift. "I can't imagine any appreciable impact on the system" in the short term, said Jim Owen of the Edison Energy Institute in Washington, D.C.

But the number of people going off the grid increases by about a third each year, said Richard Perez, who publishes Home Power magazine, dedicated to the topic, and Lori Ryker, who has written two books on the subject.

Much of the growth is in California, though off-the-grid living is also growing in Texas, New Jersey and Wisconsin.

The change is popular in the West because people are moving into remote areas beyond the reach of commercial power. Others point to environmental conscientiousness and the Westerner's traditional independent streak.

Residents in upscale, gated, Three Rivers easily could afford the $300,000 the power company said it would cost to extend its lines three miles (4.8 kilometers) or so to their property 10 years ago.

But they have decided to stay off the grid.

"With power lines come streetlights, and there go your stars at night," Sweet said. "And there are no power outages here."

Off-the-grid residents have a guaranteed power supply at a time when the emphasis on "clean" energy is on the rise. Solar energy uses no resources to speak of, emits no pollution and is immune to energy price hikes.

Still, living off the grid is not cheap.

High demand for solar panels and improved technology has kept the price up, and Three Rivers homeowners say an advanced solar energy system can cost $25,000 (euro18,496) for the panels, batteries, inverter and other equipment. The federal government and most states offer tax credits.

Savings over commercial power costs depend on the investment and durability of the system and local energy prices.

Silent and simple, with no moving parts, solar panels convert sunlight to DC energy, send it through inverters that change it to AC and store it in batteries that can supply the 110-volt needs of a home for three or four days. The panels last about 25 years, the banks of batteries about 10. If the batteries run low during cloudy periods, generators recharge them.

"We went from Feb. 11 to Sept. 15 (in 2006) and the generator never ran. All solar," Sweet said.

Residents with wells need generators for their pumps, and propane powers high-demand appliances such as stoves.

Beyond that, the sun does the job.

From 80 to 85 percent of off-the-grid homes rely on solar power because it is the most available and reliable in most areas, said resident Richard Perez. And with no moving parts, it is easier to maintain.

Many rural and urban homeowners are using partial alternative systems -- adding solar panels as a supplement while staying on the commercial power grid. If they produce more power than they use, they can sell it back to the power companies, which usually are required to buy it.

Homeowners are not alone in going off the grid.

The Los Angeles Community College District hopes to start moving its nine campuses, plus two in development, onto solar power beginning next year.

Larry Eisenberg, executive director for facilities planning, said that with credits and other incentives through private contractors, systems will cost between $900,000 (euro665,877) and $1.8 million (euro1.3 million) each and that energy savings should recover capital costs in about two years.

"Our goal is to save $9 million (euro6.6 million) a year," he said. "We want to show people this can work. We've been chatting with a lot of people. If we can do it, anyone else can do it too."

A Resource-Based Economy is a system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. The premise upon which this system is based is that the Earth is abundant with plentiful resource; our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter productive to our survival.

Modern society has access to highly advanced technology and can make available food, clothing, housing and medical care; update our educational system; and develop a limitless supply of renewable, non-contaminating energy. By supplying an efficiently designed economy, everyone can enjoy a very high standard of living with all of the amenities of a high technological society.

A resource-based economy would utilize existing resources from the land and sea, physical equipment, industrial plants, etc. to enhance the lives of the total population. In an economy based on resources rather than money, we could easily produce all of the necessities of life and provide a high standard of living for all.

Consider the following examples: At the beginning of World War II the US had a mere 600 or so first-class fighting aircraft. We rapidly overcame this short supply by turning out more than 90,000 planes a year. The question at the start of World War II was: Do we have enough funds to produce the required implements of war? The answer was No, we did not have enough money, nor did we have enough gold; but we did have more than enough resources. It was the available resources that enabled the US to achieve the high production and efficiency required to win the war. Unfortunately this is only considered in times of war.

In a resource-based economy all of the world's resources are held as the common heritage of all of Earth's people, thus eventually outgrowing the need for the artificial boundaries that separate people. This is the unifying imperative.

We must emphasize that this approach to global governance has nothing whatever in common with the present aims of an elite to form a world government with themselves and large corporations at the helm, and the vast majority of the world's population subservient to them. Our vision of globalization empowers each and every person on the planet to be the best they can be, not to live in abject subjugation to a corporate governing body.

Our proposals would not only add to the well being of people, but they would also provide the necessary information that would enable them to participate in any area of their competence. The measure of success would be based on the fulfillment of one's individual pursuits rather than the acquisition of wealth, property and power.

At present, we have enough material resources to provide a very high standard of living for all of Earth's inhabitants. Only when population exceeds the carrying capacity of the land do many problems such as greed, crime and violence emerge. By overcoming scarcity, most of the crimes and even the prisons of today's society would no longer be necessary.

A resource-based world economy would also involve all-out efforts to develop new, clean, and renewable sources of energy: geothermal; controlled fusion; solar; photovoltaic; wind, wave, and tidal power; and even fuel from the oceans. We would eventually be able to have energy in unlimited quantity that could propel civilization for thousands of years. A resource-based economy must also be committed to the redesign of our cities, transportation systems, and industrial plants, allowing them to be energy efficient, clean, and conveniently serve the needs of all people.

What else would a resource-based economy mean? Technology intelligently and efficiently applied, conserves energy, reduces waste, and provides more leisure time. With automated inventory on a global scale, we can maintain a balance between production and distribution. Only nutritious and healthy food would be available and planned obsolescence would be unnecessary and non-existent in a resource-based economy.

As we outgrow the need for professions based on the monetary system, for instance lawyers, bankers, insurance agents, marketing and advertising personnel, salespersons, and stockbrokers, a considerable amount of waste will be eliminated. Considerable amounts of energy would also be saved by eliminating the duplication of competitive products such as tools, eating utensils, pots, pans and vacuum cleaners. Choice is good. But instead of hundreds of different manufacturing plants and all the paperwork and personnel required to turn out similar products, only a few of the highest quality would be needed to serve the entire population. Our only shortage is the lack of creative thought and intelligence in ourselves and our elected leaders to solve these problems. The most valuable, untapped resource today is human ingenuity.

With the elimination of debt, the fear of losing one's job will no longer be a threat This assurance, combined with education on how to relate to one another in a much more meaningful way, could considerably reduce both mental and physical stress and leave us free to explore and develop our abilities.

If the thought of eliminating money still troubles you, consider this: If a group of people with gold, diamonds and money were stranded on an island that had no resources such as food, clean air and water, their wealth would be irrelevant to their survival. It is only when resources are scarce that money can be used to control their distribution. One could not, for example, sell the air we breathe or water abundantly flowing down from a mountain stream. Although air and water are valuable, in abundance they cannot be sold.

Money is only important in a society when certain resources for survival must be rationed and the people accept money as an exchange medium for the scarce resources. Money is a social convention, an agreement if you will. It is neither a natural resource nor does it represent one. It is not necessary for survival unless we have been conditioned to accept it as such.

The original May 15th gas protest was a start, but lacked a real solution. People took it one step further. Permanently boycotting Exxon Mobile is an excellent idea and will actually do some damage where damage needs to be done. But it's still a patch over the bleeding sore that is draining our country of it's life blood. We need true alternatives. They are already here and are time tested. Are you ready to be free? Here's the revolution, join it.

1. Bio-Diesel:
Rudolph diesel made the diesel engine to run off of peanut oil so that the farmers could grow their own fuel. During the petro explosion of the 30's when they had so much gas they didn't know what to do with it they made diesel from petro by-products. Diesel engines are fully functional with bio-fuel and get better mileage and have drastically reduced emissions. It's using a lubricant as fuel so the engine lasts longer. It's better all the way around. Also your using a by-product of restaurants so there's an endless supply of WASTE veggie oil. The most productive land usage and output for oil is hemp oil which produces 350+ gallons of oil PER ACRE PER YEAR. Bio-diesel requires very little modification to your car. Although you must have a diesel engine and I believe that new models (post 02'?) won't work. Something to do with the newer engines.

2. Bio-Mass Ethanol
There is already ethanol in production and in use. Race cars have been using ethanol for years and they work exceptionally well. Gas in California is already blended with ethanol and they are already making cars that support E85(85% Ethanol). They almost always talk about corn ethanol, which to my understanding is the worst way to go. For one your using a food supply. Sugar cane ethanol produces 8 times more ethanol. Also ethanol can be made from the billions of tons of Ag waste each year. You can grow prairie grass, switch grass, that grows around 14 feet in one year to make ethanol. Brazil decided under a dictator in the 80's that they had to get off of foreign oil dependence and they did in 20 years. Almost all of their cars are flex fuel hybrids and tribrids.

3. Air
People have been attempting and designing a car that runs off of air for decades. Now it's here. It's much the same as a pneumatic drill in that it uses air to push a piston. Simple dimple. Make a light car and then power it with compressed air. The only pollution is that of compressing the air which can be done with solar panels at home or a variety of other ways. This is the technology we have been waiting for for our whole lives. Much of inflation comes from fuel prices. Imagine how to world will change when we can move around for free with now guilt.

You can run *any* gasoline car off of water. Water is MUCH more powerful than gasoline. With simple low volt DC electrolysis you can split H20 into HHO and burn it cleanly. Exhaust=water+heat. Green homes? Organic food? Nature is good? Time To Give The Ol’ Tie-Dyers Some Respect

Go ahead, name your movement. Name something good and positive and pro-environment and eco-friendly that’s happening right now in the newly “greening” America and don’t say more guns in Texas or fewer reproductive choices for women or endless vile unwinnable BushCo wars in the Middle East lasting until roughly 2075 because that would defeat the whole point of this perky little column and destroy its naive tone of happy rose-colored sardonic optimism. OK?

I’m talking about, say, energy-efficient light bulbs. . I’m looking at organic foods going mainstream. I mean chemical-free cleaning products widely available at Target and I’m talking saving the whales and protecting the dolphins and I mean yoga studios flourishing in every small town, giant boxes of organic cereal at Costco and non-phthalates dildos Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at Good Vibes and the Toyota Prius becoming the nation’s oddest status symbol. You know, good things.

Look around: we have entire industries devoted to recycled paper, a new generation of cheap solar-power technology and an Oscar for “An Inconvenient Truth” and even the soulless corporate monsters over at famously heartless joints like Wal-Mart are now claiming that they really, really care about saving the environment because, well, “it’s the right thing to do” (read: It’s purely economic and all about their bottom line because if they don’t start caring they’ll soon be totally screwed on manufacturing and shipping costs at/from all their brutal Chinese sweatshops).

There is but one conclusion you can draw from the astonishing (albeit fitful, bittersweet) pro-environment sea change now happening in the culture and (reluctantly, nervously) in the halls of power in D.C., one thing we must all acknowledge in our wary, jaded, globally warmed universe: The hippies had it right all along. Oh yes they did.

You know it’s true. All this hot enthusiasm for healing the planet and eating whole foods and avoiding chemicals and working with nature and developing the self? Came from the hippies. Alternative health? Hippies. Green cotton? Hippies. Reclaimed wood? Recycling? Humane treatment of animals? Medical pot? Alternative energy? Natural childbirth? Non-GMA seeds? It came from the granola types (who, of course, absorbed much of it from ancient cultures), from the alternative worldviews, from the underground and the sidelines and from far off the goddamn grid and it’s about time the media, the politicians, the culture as a whole sent out a big, wet, hemp-covered apology.

Here’s a suggestion, from one of my more astute ex-hippie readers: Instead of issuing carbon credits so industrial polluters can clear their collective corporate conscience, maybe, to help offset all the savage damage they’ve done to the soul of the planet all these years, these commercial cretins should instead buy some karma credits from the former hippies themselves. You know, from those who’ve been working for the health of the planet, quite thanklessly, for the past 50 years and who have, as a result, built up quite a storehouse of good karma. You think?

Of course, you can easily argue that much of the “authentic” hippie ethos — the anti-corporate ideology, the sexual liberation, the anarchy, the push for civil rights, the experimentation — has been totally leeched out of all these new movements, that corporations have forcibly co-opted and diluted every single technology and humble pro-environment idea and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cone and Odwalla smoothie to make them both palatable and profitable. But does this somehow make the organic oils in that body lotion any more harmful? Verily, it does not.

You might also just as easily claim that much of the nation’s reluctant turn toward environmental health has little to do with the hippies per se, that it’s taking the threat of global meltdown combined with the notion of really, really expensive ski tickets to slap the nation’s incredibly obese ass into gear and force consumers to begin to wake up to the savage gluttony and wastefulness of American culture as everyone starts wondering, oh my God, what’s going to happen to swimming pools and NASCAR and free shipping from Amazon? Of course, without the ’60s groundwork, without all the radical ideas and seeds of change planted nearly five decades ago, what we’d be turning to in our time of need would be a great deal more hopeless indeed.

But if you’re really bitter and shortsighted, you could say the entire hippie movement overall was just incredibly overrated, gets far too much cultural credit for far too little actual impact, was pretty much a giant excuse to slack off and enjoy dirty lazy responsibility-free sex romps and do a ton of drugs and avoid Vietnam and not bathe for a month and name your child Sunflower or Shiva Moon or Chakra Lennon Sapphire Bumblebee. This is what’s called the reactionary simpleton’s view. It blithely ignores history, perspective, the evolution of culture as a whole. You know, just like America.

But, you know, whatever. The proofs are easy enough to trace. The core values and environmental groundwork laid by the ’60s counterculture are still so intact and potent even the stiffest neocon Republican has to acknowledge their extant power. It’s all right there: Treehugger.com is the new ’60s underground hippy zine. Ecstasy is the new LSD. Visible tattoos are the new longhairs. And bands as diverse as Pearl Jam to Bright Eyes to NIN to the Dixie Chicks are writing savage anti-Bush, anti-war songs for a new, ultra-jaded generation.

And oh yes, speaking of good ol’ MDMA (Ecstasy), even drug culture is getting some new respect. Staid old Time mag just ran a rather snide little story about the new studies being conducted by Harvard and the National Institute of Mental Health into the astonishing psychospiritual benefits of goodly entheogens such as LSD, psilocybin and MDMA. Unfortunately, the piece basically backhands Timothy Leary and the entire “excessive,” “naive” drug culture of yore in favor of much more “sane” and “careful” scientific analysis happening now, as if the only valid methods for attaining knowledge and an understanding of spirit were through control groups and clinical, mysticism-free examination. Please.

Still, the fact that serious scientific research into entheogens is being conducted even in the face of the most anti-science, pro-pharmaceutical, ultra-conservative presidential regime in recent history is proof enough that all the hoary old hippie mantras about expanding the mind and touching God through drugs were onto something after all (yes, duh). Tim Leary is probably smiling wildly right now — though that might be due to all the mushrooms he’s been sharing with Kerouac and Einstein and Mary Magdalene. Mmm, heaven.

Of course, true hippie values mean you’re not really supposed to care about or attach to any of this, you don’t give a damn for the hollow ego stroke of being right all along, for slapping the culture upside the head and saying, See? Do you see? It was never about the long hair and the folk music and Woodstock and taking so much acid you see Jesus and Shiva and Buddha tongue kissing in a hammock on the Dog Star, nimrods.

It was, always and forever, about connectedness. It was about how we are all in this together. It was about resisting the status quo and fighting tyrannical corporate/political power and it was about opening your consciousness and seeing new possibilities of how we can all live with something resembling actual respect for the planet, for alternative cultures, for each other. You know, all that typical hippie crap no one believes in anymore. Right?

Equal Exchange Stands with Small Farmers and their Co-ops

Many of our friends have heard the news about the USDA's National Organic Program ruling that appears to indicate an end to group organic certification of small farmer co-operatives. This is of course a concern for Equal Exchange because the core of our mission is partnering with small family farmers and supporting their organizations. Group organic certification has been key to our success - and the success of our farmer partners - over the years. In particular, it has made organic certification accessible to poor farmers in the developing world who would otherwise be unable to afford it.

But group certification is also crucial to the organic movement as a whole:
Group certification makes access to the organic market possible for poor farmers and their families, improving their incomes and protecting their communities, farm workers and the environment from harmful agricultural chemicals. Ending group certification would devastate these communities, making certification for individual farmers prohibitively expensive and resulting in increased rural poverty and migration, and a return to less sustainable, chemical-dependent farming. Farmers' co-ops that have spend years developing organic programs to help them access the US marketplace would see all of this work go to waste;

Group certification is central to the growing organic food industry in our own country. As demand for organic products such as organic coffee, tea, cocoa and sugar continues to grow dramatically, the process enables buyers to access quality organic food grown by family farmers around the world. Ending group certification would cut off supply chains for hundreds of businesses that depend on co-operatives for their organic products, and increase prices for others. Particularly affected would be organizations - such as Equal Exchange - that are committed to Fair Trade as a model for empowering small farmers and their co-ops;

And of course, group certification also provides US consumers with delicious, nutritious organic foods grown with care by family farmers. Without group certification, consumers will be left with fewer choices as the supply of these products declines dramatically, raising retail prices and leaving only large farms and plantations in the organic system.

We at Equal Exchange believe in the original goals of the organic movement: creating a credible system that helps protect the environment, support family farmers and farm workers, and provides consumers with healthy, safe and nutritious food. A certification system that supports this effort must also have integrity. We believe that group organic certification has been very effective to date, and should be formalized and improved upon, rather than discarded.

We are therefore joining with other organizations - farmers, consumers, NGOs and the business community - in calling on the USDA to delay this ruling and instead focus on making group certification work better.

One of the cornerstones of the organization's findings is the fact that many of the dysfunctional behaviors of today's society stem directly from the dehumanizing environment inherent in the existing monetary system. Moreover, the currently utilized random implementation of automation and other technologies have resulted in a fragmented, self-defeating trend occurring throughout the manufacturing and high-tech sectors of today's global economy--namely the technological replacement of human labor by machines. The Venus Project proposes a social system in which automation and technology would be intelligently applied and integrated into an overall social design where the primary function would be to maximize the quality of life rather than profits. This project also introduces a set of workable and acceptable human values that are more appropriate and in balance with our present state of technology.

A RESOURCE BASED ECONOMY

A Resource-Based Economy is a system in which all goods and services are available without the use of money, credits, barter or any other system of debt or servitude. All resources become the common heritage of all of the inhabitants, not just a select few. The premise upon which this system is based is that the Earth is abundant with plentiful resource; our practice of rationing resources through monetary methods is irrelevant and counter productive to our survival.

Modern society has access to highly advanced technology and can make available food, clothing, housing and medical care; update our educational system; and develop a limitless supply of renewable, non-contaminating energy. By supplying an efficiently designed economy, everyone can enjoy a very high standard of living with all of the amenities of a high technological society.

A resource-based economy would utilize existing resources from the land and sea, physical equipment, industrial plants, etc. to enhance the lives of the total population. In an economy based on resources rather than money, we could easily produce all of the necessities of life and provide a high standard of living for all.

Consider the following examples: At the beginning of World War II the US had a mere 600 or so first-class fighting aircraft. We rapidly overcame this short supply by turning out more than 90,000 planes a year. The question at the start of World War II was: Do we have enough funds to produce the required implements of war? The answer was No, we did not have enough money, nor did we have enough gold; but we did have more than enough resources. It was the available resources that enabled the US to achieve the high production and efficiency required to win the war. Unfortunately this is only considered in times of war.

In a resource-based economy all of the world's resources are held as the common heritage of all of Earth's people, thus eventually outgrowing the need for the artificial boundaries that separate people. This is the unifying imperative.

We must emphasize that this approach to global governance has nothing whatever in common with the present aims of an elite to form a world government with themselves and large corporations at the helm, and the vast majority of the world's population subservient to them. Our vision of globalization empowers each and every person on the planet to be the best they can be, not to live in abject subjugation to a corporate governing body.

Our proposals would not only add to the well being of people, but they would also provide the necessary information that would enable them to participate in any area of their competence. The measure of success would be based on the fulfillment of one's individual pursuits rather than the acquisition of wealth, property and power.

At present, we have enough material resources to provide a very high standard of living for all of Earth's inhabitants. Only when population exceeds the carrying capacity of the land do many problems such as greed, crime and violence emerge. By overcoming scarcity, most of the crimes and even the prisons of today's society would no longer be necessary.

A resource-based world economy would also involve all-out efforts to develop new, clean, and renewable sources of energy: geothermal; controlled fusion; solar; photovoltaic; wind, wave, and tidal power; and even fuel from the oceans. We would eventually be able to have energy in unlimited quantity that could propel civilization for thousands of years. A resource-based economy must also be committed to the redesign of our cities, transportation systems, and industrial plants, allowing them to be energy efficient, clean, and conveniently serve the needs of all people.

What else would a resource-based economy mean? Technology intelligently and efficiently applied, conserves energy, reduces waste, and provides more leisure time. With automated inventory on a global scale, we can maintain a balance between production and distribution. Only nutritious and healthy food would be available and planned obsolescence would be unnecessary and non-existent in a resource-based economy.

As we outgrow the need for professions based on the monetary system, for instance lawyers, bankers, insurance agents, marketing and advertising personnel, salespersons, and stockbrokers, a considerable amount of waste will be eliminated. Considerable amounts of energy would also be saved by eliminating the duplication of competitive products such as tools, eating utensils, pots, pans and vacuum cleaners. Choice is good. But instead of hundreds of different manufacturing plants and all the paperwork and personnel required to turn out similar products, only a few of the highest quality would be needed to serve the entire population. Our only shortage is the lack of creative thought and intelligence in ourselves and our elected leaders to solve these problems. The most valuable, untapped resource today is human ingenuity.

With the elimination of debt, the fear of losing one's job will no longer be a threat This assurance, combined with education on how to relate to one another in a much more meaningful way, could considerably reduce both mental and physical stress and leave us free to explore and develop our abilities.

If the thought of eliminating money still troubles you, consider this: If a group of people with gold, diamonds and money were stranded on an island that had no resources such as food, clean air and water, their wealth would be irrelevant to their survival. It is only when resources are scarce that money can be used to control their distribution. One could not, for example, sell the air we breathe or water abundantly flowing down from a mountain stream. Although air and water are valuable, in abundance they cannot be sold.

Money is only important in a society when certain resources for survival must be rationed and the people accept money as an exchange medium for the scarce resources. Money is a social convention, an agreement if you will. It is neither a natural resource nor does it represent one. It is not necessary for survival unless we have been conditioned to accept it as such.
